Melvin Rhodes died suddenly on December 26,2007. He was working on his tree farm when he was struck with a fatal heart attack. Mercifully, he never suffered, and he died exactly in the place that he would have chosen. Hopefully, this site will be a forum for his family and friends to share their memories, reflections, and anecdotes. Please feel free to add more as they come to your mind. The time that I had to get to know Melvin was most special. We had developed a great working relationship, but also, he was a great neighbor and friend. He was a very kind and caring individual, which he showed to me and my family on numerous occasions. His kindness was greatly appreciated and will certainly be missed.
STARKVILLE - MELVIN C. RHODES, 62, DIED DEC. 26, 2007, AT HIS TREE FARM NEAR EUPORA. SERVICES ARE SATURDAY AT 10:30 A.M. AT EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION WITH THE REVS. LEE WINTERS AND J. PAUL VANDERCOOK OFFICIATING. BURIAL WILL FOLLOW IN A PRIVATE FAMILY GRAVESIDE CEREMONY IN EUPORA. VISITATION IS TODAY FROM 4-7 P.M. AT THE CHURCH. CALVERT FUNERAL HOME OF WEST POINT IS IN CHARGE OF ARRANGEMENTS. MR. RHODES WAS BORN JULY 14, 1945, IN STARKVILLE. HE WAS OWNER OF LEN-LEW'S, RHODES TIRE SERVICE, AND RHODES REPAIRS AND RENTALS. HE WAS ALSO A FORMER COMMANDER OF THE LOCAL VFW AND FORMER MEMBER OF THE STARKVILLE BOARD OF ALDERMAN. IN HIS YOUTH, HE WAS A 4-H ALL-STAR WINNER FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS. HE WAS A MEMBER OF EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION IN STARKVILLE. HE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE INQUIRER'S SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN STARKVILLE. HE WAS A VETERAN OF THE U.S. ARMY SERVING IN THE 11TH ARMED CALVARY DURING THE VIETNAM ERA. HE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS FATHER, CLAIBORNE MCDONALD RHODES. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, JANICE HARRISON RHODES OF STARKVILLE; DAUGHTERS, TIFFINY LORRAINE MOSELEY OF FAIRHOPE, ALA., AND LADY DARIAN COX AND ALYSON OLIVIA RHODES HERBERT, BOTH OF STARKVILLE; MOTHER, DAISY LEE BROWN RHODES OF IUKA; SISTERS, RUTH HUNT OF IUKA, AND MABEL STURDIVANT OF CARTHAGE; AND FIVE GRANDCHILDREN. PALLBEARERS WILL BE JO ROLFE, SAM GROSS, BEN JONES SR., BEN JONES JR., DAVID HORNSBY, DARREN MILLER AND JIM LEIST.
